The Hunter Region - commonly known as the Hunter Valley - is a region in New South Wales extending from approximately 120 km to 310 km north of Sydney.
The Hunter Valley and Upper Hunter Country region incorporates some of the most inspiring wilderness from the Barrington Tops or the spectacular lake and coast line of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
The Hunter Region contains the Hunter River and its tributaries. The Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys on the New South Wales coast, and is most commonly known for its wineries and coal industry.
The major towns and cities in this region include: Newcastle - situated at the mouth of the Hunter River and is the largest city in the region. The immediate metropolitan area includes Lake Macquarie, the Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens areas. Other major centres of the Hunter Region are Dungog, Forster / Tuncurry, Gloucester, Kurri Kurri, Muswellbrook, Scone and Singleton.
The Hunter Valley region is a major tourist destination in New South Wales. The Hunter Valley region is the 6th most visited place in Australia attracting more than 2.5 million people annually.
